I have been drawing and painting since I was a child and my life long ambition to be an artist.Like all dreams life seems to get in the way. “Being an artist won’t pay the bills!” True? but you have to keep trying. As a child I was brought up in the country side spending all my spare time wandering through fields, watching the birds and generally becoming familiar with the local wildlife. My first drawings were of birds and their surroundings. The sense of freedom that can be expressed or experienced by sitting quietly observing life go by is astounding. I have a mixed approach to how I work. I love the stunning colours of the sunsets seen over the bay, so I choose to use an expressionistic style when I work on landscape or seascapes as I want to capture the feel and array of colour.
I am now in the process of studying people in their surrounding’s and want to become more of a figurative painter which includes portraiture.I am keen to develop in this area. My method is to carry out studies in pencil and then explore different mediums to suit the particular portrait that I am working on. I have completed a number of commissioned works, more recently of children this is very challenging as they never seem to stop moving. So my method is to spend time with the child and the family just chatting , observing and taking numerous digital photographs. Using this reference material to try to pull together the emotional and visual information to produce a piece of work which connects with the viewer. I am now also using reference photos taken by clients as this reduces the time needed and makes a portrait more affordable
Drawing skills are the key to good portrait art as clients want a recognizable
image in my opinion. So much of my time is spent drawing. I am not a purest in approach and believe a judicious use of digital photography is quite acceptable if you want to capture people in interesting situations.
